Love Has No Age: Why Senior Cats Make the Best Companions

Older cats often get overlooked in shelters, but their calm, affectionate nature and quiet loyalty make them some of the best pets you could ever adopt.

When it comes to pet adoption, it's easy to fall for the playful energy of kittens. But there’s something uniquely special about welcoming an older cat into your life. Senior cats may be quieter and more relaxed, but they bring a sense of calm, companionship and emotional depth that many pet owners find deeply rewarding.

At Sydney Dogs & Cats Home, senior cats are often the most affectionate and low-maintenance animals in their care. They’ve typically lived in homes before, are litter-trained, and are ready to settle into a new routine. Most are surrendered through no fault of their own—due to an owner's health or living situation, not because of their behaviour or condition.

"They’re some of the most loving animals we care for," says Melissa Penn Managing Director at Sydney Dogs & Cats Home. "They’ve known family life, they know how to fit into a home, and they’re ready to settle in again. People just need to give them the opportunity."

Senior cats also tend to thrive in calm environments. They love routine, quiet spaces and a warm lap to curl up on. They’re past the stage of climbing curtains or demanding constant attention, making them ideal companions for those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

This August, Breeder’s Choice is supporting a new awareness campaign called Purrfect Match, which aims to spotlight the overlooked charm of senior cats and encourage more Australians to consider adopting them.

"This campaign is about more than just rehoming cats," says Steve Adams, Managing Director at Breeder’s Choice. "It’s about showing what real care looks like—and giving every cat the comfort and dignity they deserve, regardless of age."

Breeder’s Choice provides ongoing product support to shelters like Sydney Dogs & Cats Home, donating hundreds of bags of their soft, eco-friendly litter annually. It’s designed to be gentle on paws and easy on the environment.

If you’re considering adoption, don’t overlook the seniors. Their affection is genuine, their needs are modest, and their companionship is truly one of a kind. As Melissa puts it, "They may be older, but they’re not past it. They’re just waiting to be chosen."

About the Campaign

Purrfect Match is a joint initiative by Breeder’s Choice and Sydney Dogs & Cats Home, running throughout August 2025. The campaign focuses on raising awareness of senior cat adoption and encouraging the community to reconsider age when choosing a feline companion.
